Duval students required to keep phones off and ‘out-of-sight’ inside bookbags during class

The Duval County School Board has revised its “out-of-sight” cellphone policy under the Student Code of Conduct for the upcoming school year.

In the policy’s update approved just shy of a week before school doors open, the school board now requires students to keep their phones off and inside their bookbags or purses while in class unless a teacher or faculty member instructs them otherwise.

The school board said this requirement is a slight change from the previous year’s policy, which allowed students to keep their devices in their pockets.

Other wireless communication devices such as watches or earbuds also fall under the policy and are not exempt.

Students risk having their devices or cellphones confiscated if the policy is violated. DCPS said a parent or guardian would have to pick up the device if confiscated.
