Hurricane Milton: Florida schools close as huge storm approaches Gulf coast

Florida schools, colleges, and universities have announced closures ahead of Hurricane Milton, which is expected to become a major hurricane before landfall over Florida's Gulf coast.

Regardless of where the eye falls, Florida's west coast will be hit with life-threatening storm surges, flooding, damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and the potential for tornadoes. Central Florida may see heavy rain, flooding, damaging windows, and some tornado threats.

Here are the schools that have closed ahead of Milton. We'll continue to update as info comes into the newsroom.

Alachua County School Closures

• Alachua County Schools closed Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 9 & 10.

Brevard County School Closures

• Brevard County Public Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Oct. 9-11.

Flagler County School Closures

• Flagler Schools and offices will be closed Wednesday through Friday, Oct. 9-11.

Marion County School Closures

• Marion County Schools closed on Wednesday, and Thursday and Friday, Oct. 9-11.

Lake County School Closures

• Lake County Schools will be on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 8-10.

Orange County School Closures

• Orange County Schools will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 9 & 10.

Osceola County School Closures

• Osceola County Schools will be closed Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Oct. 8-11.

Polk County School Closures

• Schools will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 8-10.

Sumter County School Closures

• Sumter County Schools will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 9 & 10.

Seminole County School Closures

• Seminole County Schools will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 9 & 10.
• Friday, Oct. 11, to be determined.

Volusia County School Closures

• Volusia County Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Oct. 9, 10, and 11.

Florida College, University Closures

Daytona State College

• Closed Tuesday - Thursday, Oct. 8-10.
• All classes, both in person and online, are canceled.

Florida A&M (FAMU)

• FAMU Orlando campus will close Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 8-10.

Full Sail University

• Full Sail’s campus will be closed from Tuesday, October 8 through Friday, Oct. 11.

Seminole State College

• Closed through Friday, Oct. 11.

Stetson University

• Stetson University's campus in DeLand will be closed on Wednesday. Fall Break closes classes on Thursday and Friday.
• Students must return home, seek shelter with friends and family, or stay at a local emergency shelter.
• All classes at DeLand will be canceled on Tuesday and
• Classes are expected to resume Monday, Oct. 14.

Rollins College

• Classes and events are canceled all week through Friday, Oct. 11.
• Student Outreach & Resource Center will help students evacuate to a Red Cross shelter if needed.
• Full Sail University: No school closures have been announced.

University of Central Florida

• UCF will close from Wednesday through Thursday.
• There are plans to reopen on Friday pending storm assessment.

University of Florida

• All campuses are closed on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 9 & 10.
• Regularly check the UF homepage for updates. Any announcements regarding operational changes will be made through official UF channels, including the UF Alert Emergency Notification System."

Valencia College

• Closed through Thursday, Oct. 10.
